The EU-Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement
The EU and Kenya concluded negotiations for an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) on 19 June 2023.
The agreement will boost trade in goods and create new economic opportunities, with targeted cooperation to enhance Kenya’s economic development. It is the most ambitious EU deal with an African country in terms of climate protection and labour rights.
The agreement will:
- Foresee immediate full liberalisation of the EU market for Kenyan products;
- incentivise EU investment to Kenya, thanks to increased legal certainty and stability;
- contain strong trade and sustainability commitments, including binding provisions on labour matters, gender equality, environment and the fight against climate change, and;
- include a dedicated chapter on economic and development cooperation, to enhancing the competitiveness of the Kenyan economy.
