Commission announces shortlist for Fair and Ethical Trade City Award

Following 11 applications from cities’ authorities across the European Union, the Evaluation Committee has compiled a shortlist of 5 cities for the EU Cities for Fair and Ethical Trade Award.

Launched in 2017, the award was created to celebrate and support the initiatives that are currently taking place in cities that encourage more fair and ethical trade practices.

The short-listed cities, in alphabetical order, are:

  • A. Bremen
  • B. Gothenburg
  • C. Malmö
  • D. Neumarkt
  • E. Stuttgart

Executive Vice-President and the ad interim Commissioner for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis said: “Each of these cities has taken initiatives and produced results that can motivate others to follow their lead. Their fair and ethical policies shown what can be achieved at a local level. They are also raising awareness of how purchasing choices can have an effect on both producers and workers in developing countries. The winner will be announced on 16 October 2020.”

Trade can be a powerful tool to have a positive impact on lives throughout the supply chain. Local authorities can play an important role, both by making sustainable choices as well as by raising people’s awareness of the impact of their consumption patterns.

The Award is an initiative of the European Commission.

The project is implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC) in cooperation with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade (DG Trade).

The Award Winner will be announced at the official award ceremony on 16 October 2020 in Ghent.
