Romania - From Sibiu to the world: How Spectroo turned EU trade rules into a global springboard

In a tranquil office in Transylvania, a team of eight is quietly powering thousands of screens across Europe - and beyond.

Spectroo Software SRL, a Romanian company specialising in digital signage, has built a business on the backbone of the EU single market, then used it to leap 10,000 kilometres away - without ever leaving home.

The Single Market: A Classroom Without Borders

Founded in 2017 in Romania, Spectroo sells software for cloud-controlled screens for shops, pharmacies, petrol stations, offices and factories. 25% of its revenue comes from exports inside the EU. The absence of tariffs, and the single legal framework of the single market have given Spectroo the opportunity to learn to serve customers in Germany or France as easily as in Bucharest.

That frictionless EU experience became their training ground. When a long-standing EU client needed screens in a Mexican factory, Spectroo saw an opportunity: Could their model work 10,000 km away?

Mexico: A tiny test with big lessons

The project was small – just 0.3% of revenue – but the challenges were real. First of all, regarding data concerns. Outside the EU, the first question from a client is: ‘Where are my content and data stored?' and uncertainty can stop a deal before the commercial discussion even begins. Inside the EU this question barely arises.

Secondly, after years of seamless EU shipping, suddenly there were customs hurdles and Spectroo had to deal with tariff codes and origin certificates for its hardware players. Add to that the issue of distance and lack of local support. If a screen failed, no one could fly out to fix it.

The key to success? EU trade policy.

While the EU Single Market helped us build the capacity and scale to attempt anything beyond Europe at all, EU trade policy is what made going further possible.

How EU trade deals made it possible

Spectroo’s global leap relied on negotiated rules under the EU-Mexico Agreement:

  • No tariffs on electronic transmissions – Spectroo’s service crosses borders without customs duties.
  • No forced data localisation or transfer of source code – the company serves Mexico from EU servers, avoiding costly duplicates.
  • Electronic contracts recognised - deals are signed and invoiced remotely, legally.
  • GDPR as a trust badge – being an EU supplier is a trust signal. "EU compliance sells for us before we even speak."

"Without these rules, we’d need offices in every country," says Spectroo. “We’re not a multinational. We’re eight people in Sibiu, but the EU built a system where eight people can sell to the world."

Next Stop: Asia, via Singapore

The small Mexican project proved geography wasn’t a limit. The ripple effects were better products and higher engineering standards.  Multi-language, multi-currency, multi-time zone features – built for Mexico, are now standard in Romania and Europe.

The export experience from Mexico changed our ambition. If a factory on another continent can be served from Sibiu with no local presence, geography is no longer the limit on where we sell – capacity is. A working reference outside Europe turns expansion from an aspiration into a plan.

Now, Spectroo is targeting Asia, using Singapore as a gateway, realistic for a company of this size largely because of the EU-Singapore Digital Trade Agreement. In force since February 2026, this agreement ensures no data localisation requirements, no digital tariffs, and provides legal certainty.

Spectroo’s advice to other companies

  • Export with a customer, not against a market. Your first sale beyond the EU should come from a relationship you already have. Ours did.
  • Use the single market as your training ground. We learned to operate at distance where it was cheap to learn, then went further.
  • Read the digital chapter before the tariff schedule. For a services company that is where the value sits, and most SMEs never open it.
  • Do not assume you are too small. Ours is a fraction of a percent of revenue today - but it was enough to prove a model and change what we believe is possible.

Spectroo’s story isn’t just about conquering markets. It’s about a system that works – where a small Romanian firm can sell across 27 countries as easily as one and use EU trade deals to go global without leaving home.

EU trade agreements didn’t just remove barriers, they built a bridge that Spectroo walked across.

And they’re still walking.
