IMD Generators, part of the IMD Group, produces X-ray generators for medical imaging devices. Hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres worldwide use its equipment. South Korea has emerged as one of the company's fastest-growing markets in recent years. The country's technological strength, appetite for innovation and business infrastructure offered IMD Generators a clear opportunity to expand beyond Europe.

How the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement propelled IMD's success

Breaking into this competitive market took time and persistence. Cultural differences and formal business practices initially made trust-building difficult. Korean companies required high technical standards and demanded crystal-clear documentation and product specifications – more so than customers elsewhere.

The company was able to demonstrate product quality through rigorous testing and responded rapidly to technical queries. This steady engagement helped to build confidence and opened doors to deeper collaboration. The EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement accelerated this growth. Tariff elimination on European products strengthened IMD's price competitiveness. The company secured Authorised Exporter status, which streamlined customs procedures. These advantages enabled smoother trade flows and sharper pricing.

Entering the Korean market required patience and commitment. By consistently demonstrating quality, reliability and technical expertise, we earned the trust of our customers. The EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement helped us to compete on an equal footing and grow steadily over time.

A prescription for growth: Navigating Korea’s demanding market

The results speak for themselves. Korea accounted for 3% of IMD Generators' global turnover in 2022, jumped to 5% in 2023, and reached 11% in 2024. The company expects further growth. Korean partners now showcase equipment fitted with IMD monoblocs at international trade fairs – powerful advertising for the brand.

An unexpected benefit has emerged too. Meeting Korea's demanding documentation requirements has sharpened IMD Generators' internal quality processes, strengthening the business overall.
