European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the Clean Trade and Investment Partnerships (CTIP) initiative in her political guidelines for the new Commission in July 2024. CTIPs are intended to better align the EU’s engagement on trade, investment, climate, energy and development cooperation with third countries.
Talks for a CTIP between the EU and South Africa were launched at the 8th EU-South Africa Summit on 13 March 2025 by the president of the Commission and the president of South Africa. The CTIP should facilitate trade and investment in strategic clean supply chains such as green hydrogen, renewable energy and critical raw materials, and promote investments.
In the meeting, the Commission will present the latest developments in the talks with South Africa on a CTIP and discuss with civil society the state of play and next steps.
