The EU is the largest trading and investment partner of Sub-Saharan Africa. Its trade engagement in the region is supported by 6 Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) with 15 countries. The main objective of the agreements is to leverage trade and investment for sustainable development. The most recent EPA to be applied is the EU-Kenya EPA that entered into force on 1 July 2024.

Sustainable Investment Facilitation Agreements (SIFAs) provide a new platform for engagement with African countries and aim to improve investment climates to support sustainable development. The EU’s first-ever SIFA with Angola entered into force on 1 September 2024, and the Commission is currently exploring similar agreements with other interested partner countries.
