On 2 April 2019, the EU requested consultations with India on excessive import duties on certain information and communications technology products from the EU.

Since 2014, India started to apply import duties in excess of the 0% bound rate in its Schedule of Concessions and Commitments annexed to the GATT 1994 (“Schedule”) on imports of certain goods in the information and technology sector. Applied duties range up to 20 % on imports from the EU.

These products include cell phones, telephone handsets, wires used for telecommunication, static converters and base stations. Consultations with India took place on 21 May 2019 but failed to resolve the issue.

Status

On 2 April 2019, the EU requested consultations with India on its excessive duties on certain information and communications technology products from the EU. Consultations with India took place on 21 May 2019 but failed to resolve the issue. On 17 February 2020, the EU requested the establishment of a panel.
